What is 14K gold?
14K gold contains 58.3% pure gold and 41.7% alloy metals. It is the most common karat for jewelry sold in the United States, Canada, and much of Latin America. The "585" hallmark stamped inside rings and on clasps refers to this 58.3% gold content.
14K dominates the US market because it balances affordability with a warm gold appearance. It is the standard for engagement rings, wedding bands, everyday pendants, and chain necklaces in North America. Most mass-produced fashion jewelry in the US is also 14K. If you buy gold jewelry from a US retailer and the listing does not specify karat, it is almost certainly 14K.
Durability and daily wear
14K gold is harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K or 22K because of its higher alloy content. Copper and zinc in the alloy increase structural strength. This makes 14K a practical choice for rings that get daily wear, especially engagement and wedding rings. The tradeoff is a slightly lighter gold color compared to 18K.
Alloy composition
The 41.7% alloy in 14K gold typically contains copper, silver, zinc, and sometimes nickel or palladium. For yellow gold, the alloy is mostly copper and silver. Rose gold uses more copper. White gold replaces copper with palladium or nickel and is usually rhodium-plated for a bright finish.
Worked example: a 5-gram 14K gold chain
Here's how to calculate the gold content value of a 5-gram 14K gold chain at today's spot price.
- Weight: 5 grams
- Purity: 14K = 58.3% pure gold
- Spot price per gram: $141.75 (24K)
- 14K price per gram: $141.75 × 0.583 = $82.64
- Gold content value: 5g × $82.64/g = $413.20
This is the melt value only. A scrap gold dealer would typically pay 70-85% of this amount ($289.24 to $351.22). Use our gold scrap calculator for a detailed breakdown including dealer buy estimates.

14K is the most popular choice for engagement rings in the US. It is harder than 18K, more resistant to scratches from daily wear, and costs less. The color difference between 14K and 18K is subtle in most settings, especially in white gold or rose gold.
Pawn shops typically pay 50-65% of the melt value for 14K scrap gold. Dedicated gold buyers pay 70-85%, and online refiners pay 85-95%. Use our gold scrap calculator for a precise melt value based on weight and today's spot price.
14K gold does not tarnish in the traditional sense (it does not oxidize like silver). However, the copper in the alloy can cause slight discoloration over years, especially with exposure to chlorine, perfume, or sweat. Regular cleaning restores the original appearance.
