What is 24K gold?
24K gold is 99.9% pure gold with virtually no alloy metals. It is the purest form of gold available commercially, marked with the "999" or "999.9" hallmark. The spot price quoted on commodity exchanges (XAU/USD) refers to this pure gold. All other karat prices are derived from the 24K price by multiplying by their purity percentage.
24K gold is primarily used for investment products: bars, coins, and bullion. Central banks hold their gold reserves in 24K. In China, Hong Kong, and parts of Southeast Asia, 24K gold jewelry (called "Chuk Kam" in Cantonese) is traditional, especially for wedding gifts and cultural celebrations. Gold coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf are 24K (999.9 fine).
Durability and daily wear
24K gold is extremely soft and malleable. It bends and scratches easily. This is why it is rarely used for everyday jewelry in Western markets. A pure gold ring would deform with normal hand use. Investment bars and coins are stored rather than worn. In Asian markets, 24K jewelry pieces tend to be simple, heavy designs (bangles, chains) where some deformation over time is culturally accepted.
Alloy composition
24K gold contains no intentional alloy metals. The 0.1% non-gold content is trace impurities that remain after refining. Gold refined to 99.99% (four-nines fine) is available but is functionally identical for pricing purposes. The absence of alloy metals gives 24K gold its characteristic deep, saturated yellow color that no other karat can match.
